Memorial Executed Civilians 26 August 1914 Latour

Monument in memory of the 71 citizens of Gomery who were executed by the Germans on 26 August 1914.

Inscriptions on the monument (translation): "LATOUR / TO HIS MARTYRS / OF 24 AUGUST 1914 / NEVER FORGOTTEN".

The association "Le Souvenir" was founded in 1929 at the initiative of the village teacher Auguste Groslambert and the widows and mothers of the 71 executed on 24 August 1914. The association keeps the memory of past events alive, organizes ceremonies and manages the care of the monument.
This association raised the money to build the monument. The foundations of the monument rest on German crosses from the now disappeared Rappes war cemetery. Abbot Liègeois, priest of Latour, proposes to hold a mass every year to commemorate the victims of 24 August 1914.
