Memorial Kathleen Stoehr

Inscription around base: "In loving memory of Kathleen Stoehr born August 12 1894, entered into life December 30 1915. She perished in the sinking of the S.S. Persia off Crete by a German submarine. Where ever she went she brought light and joy. She was beloved by all who knew her. 'His servants shall serve him and they shall see his face' The wife of Felix Stoehr, Captain, Royal Engineers and the daughter of Reginald Hudson, Stratford-upon-Avon."

S.S. Persia, launched 13 August 1900, was a cargo passenger ship sailing with 519 aboard when she was torpedoed by U38 under command of Max Valentiner. Persia sunk within 10 minutes and due to the list to port only 4 lifeboats could be launched resulting in the deaths of 343 onboard. The sinking was controversial since it broke naval international law and Rules of Prize Warfare. The action took place under Germany's unrestricted submarine warfare policy but against the Germans own restriction on attacking passenger liners.
