Belgian War Grave Obaix

Gravestone in memory of Dr. Max VANDESTRATE, resistance fighter of the Second World War, Director of the Provincial Institute of Hygiene and Bacteriology of Hainaut in Mons. He was arrested in his laboratory on 8 April 1942 and imprisoned in Mons. He was deported to Bochum (D) on 7 August 1942. He was sentenced to death on charges of espionage on 26 February 1943 and beheaded in Dortmund (D), on 2 June 1943.
