Belgian War Graves Jemelle

There are still several war graves at the Jemelle cemetery:

René HASTIR was killed in Berlare (East Flanders) on October 6, 1914.
From October 4 to 7, 1914 there was heavy fighting in Berlare.
This ended on October 7, 1914, when the Germans managed to build an emergency bridge over the Scheldt at the Konkel. Thanks to the delay that the Belgian army was able to enforce on the German army in Berlare, the vast majority of Belgian soldiers escape in Antwerp.
All in all, there was relatively little material damage in Berlare afterwards.
The human toll was higher, a total of 68 Belgian and 2 German soldiers died.

François LAMBERT is listed on the monument among the civilian victims.
He died for his country in Ypres on May 24, 1940 at the age of 57.

Irène HASTIR, civilian victim of the Second World War.

Albert DERU was a resistance member of the Secret Army - Sector 5 (active on the right bank of the Maas). On September 5, 1944 he was killed during an action in Jemelle.
