Belgian War Graves Auby-sur-Semois

There are several war graves at the cemetery of Auby-sur-Semois.

BODY Félix was a sergeant with the 19th Infantry Regiment 3rd Battalion.
On October 14, 1918, the Allies' general offensive aimed to quickly drive the enemy out of Flanders and completely liberate the access to the Belgian coast and the major cities of northern Belgium.
The 19th Infantry regiment had to follow the line south of Zarren, the road that led to Kruisstraat and Abeele-Molen, to reach a waiting area in the hamlet of Aargat along the Krekelbeek. That day the 19th Infantry lost a hundred soldiers.
On October 15, 1918 at 4 am the 19th left with other units for the first objective: Edewalle (Kortemark).
The 3rd Battalion of the 19th, of which Serg eant Body was a part, advanced to the southeast of the small hamlet of Bescheewege.
During this offensive march there was a lot of enemy machine gun fire.
Colonel Hollmann and his men were supported by battery fire that made it possible to reach the southeast of Edewalle around 3 p.m.
However, many comrades in arms were killed in this campaign.
O.a. Sergeant Félix Body and Second Lieutenant Misson died on the battlefield.
After the war, Body's remains were exhumed. His coffin was carried in procession through the village and buried with a great ceremony in the family grave in Auby.

GODARD Albert was a postal collector by profession in Celles.
He was in the resistance and was arrested in Celles on March 18, 1944.
He stayed in the Neuengamme concentration camp where he died on January 22, 1945.
