Stained glass window Georges Capiau

At the back left of the church there is a memorial incorporated in one of the stained glass windows.

"IN MEMORIAM G. CAPIAU
PRO PATRIA
UNDER-LUTE. 1ST REG. LANCE.
+ MAY 14, 1940 AT BOST TIENEN"

Georges CAPIAU was born in Antwerp in 1917.
After his secondary education, he successfully graduated from the Royal Military School. In 1939 he was appointed sub-lieutenant and joined the 1st regiment of lancers.

In the Second World War, during the 18-day campaign, he was assigned to guard the Brussels-Leuven-Liège railway connection. On May 14, 1940, his regiment had to cover the retreat of the 4de lancers in the vicinity of Tienen.
When they passed the undermined railway bridge in Bost (Tienen), a terrible explosion took place. Apparently the explosive had gone off too early.
Four soldiers died while eight others were injured.
Almost 2 months later, the bodies were removed from the rubble and provisionally buried. It was not until November 24 that the body of Georges CAPIAU was transferred to the cemetery of Heide (Kalmthout). Various honors were awarded to him posthumously.

A column with a reference to the tragic event was placed on the railway bridge in Bost. The money that Georges still had in his pocket at his death was used by the family for a stained glass window in the St Joseph Church in Heide. On this stained glass window is a helmet with laurel wreath is depicted and name and date of death are stated.

At the front right, the word PAX is incorporated into the large stained glass window, with a dove of peace below it on the left and a laurel branch on the right.
