Fort Gondo

Fort Gondo is an infantry fort that was of central strategic importance in the valley narrowing of the Gondo Gorge. At the turn of the 20th century and during active service in World War I, the Army expanded the existing 19th-century
defenses in the Gondo Gorge into a barrage. The fort included a flanking gallery from which the strategically important part of the street opposite the "Grand Gallery" could be guarded. Further expansion and modernization of the fort took place shortly before and during the Second World War, when the barrage took on significant importance as part of the Reduit defence. The Stockalperweg leads in the fortress area for approximately 350 m through the connecting tunnel between the west and east galleries.
