Memorial Hargnies

Hargnies was liberated on September 5, 1944 after the last battle between the Americans and the Germans. On September 4, a maquisard was killed on the road from Vireux to the village.
On the night of September 4 to 5, an American tank arriving via Haybes was attacked by the German troops still present in the village. The bolt factory and several houses were set on fire. Residents who tried to extinguish the fire were manhandled by German troops. Seven of them were shot dead.
Fifty years later, a memorial stone was placed for this.

"This square was inaugurated
on September 4, 1994
on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary
of the liberation of Hargnies
and in memory of the innocent
civilian casualties
and resistance fighters
those on September 4 and 5, 1944
were cruelly murdered"
