Farm Sleutels
On Mad Tuesday, September 5, 1944, an unprecedented liberation fever spread across the South of the Netherlands. Reports that the end of the war was approaching also provoked reactions that had an adverse effect on the festive mood. For example, a reprisal by a person in hiding on a fleeing SS man resulted in eight German soldiers coming to seek redress. The Berkvens brothers were arrested and beaten. The Germans also threatened to burn the entire hamlet. Something that ultimately only happened with the Sleutels farm: the hideout of the person in hiding.
