Memorial Whitley Crash Hummelo

Near the graves of the crew members at Hummelo cemetery is an information board about the Whitley bomber shot down on 2-10-1940.

The British bomber, an Armstrong Whitworth Whitley belonged to the 78th Squadron of the Royal Air Force. On the night of 2/3-10-1940, the aircraft was on its way back to Dishforth base in Yorkshire after an attack on a German oil plant near Oberhausen. The plane was 'caught' by searchlight beams and eventually shot down by a German Messerschmitt 110 night fighter from Deelen airbase, near Arnhem. Above the Hummelo farmhouse 'De Balen' on the Hessenweg, the Whitley exploded. All crew members lost their lives and were buried with military honour in Hummelo.
