Stumbling Stones Hoofdstraat 21

These brass plaques (Stolpersteine or stumbling stones), laid on 16 April 2023, commemorate:

* ERNA SARA NEUSTADT (born 1893, deported 31 August 1942 from Westerbork, murdered 3 September 1942 Auschwitz)
* ALIDA SCHUIJER-VAN EMMEN (born 1884, arrested on 20 October 1942 in Haarlem, deported on 4 December 1942 from Westerbork, murdered on 7 December 1942 in Auschwitz.
* EMMA DE WINTER-COHEN (born 1867, went into hiding in 1942, died 1 May 1943 in Zaltbommel)

These Stolpersteine are laid here for Jewish war victims who were persecuted, deported and/or murdered during the Second World War.

‘Stolpersteine’ is an art project in Europe by Gunter Demnig to commemorate victims of National Socialism (Nazism).
Stolpersteine (stumbling stones) are small, 10x10cm brass plaques placed in the pavement in front of the homes of (mostly Jewish) victims of the Nazis. Each plaque bears the name of the victim, their date of birth and their fate. In this way, Gunter Demnig provides an individual memorial to each victim. One stone, one name, one person. He quotes the Talmud: ‘A person is only forgotten when their name is forgotten.’
