Fort de Dave was built between 1888 and 1892. The structure is made entirely of unreinforced concrete, which was quite unusual at the time. The fort was heavily bombed during the First World War and modernised in the 1930s. The fort also saw combat in May 1940, when it was captured by the Germans.
The front of this fort has been severely damaged in battle. Part of the front of the main entrance has been completely blown away by an explosion. The explosion was so powerful that the concrete structure was torn away from the rock against which it was built. See photo 5.
For this reason, visitors are warned not to enter the fort. The fort is not open to the public anyway, but there is a constant risk of parts of it collapsing.
