Dike Restoration monument

The Dyke Restoration Monument at Wieringerwerf was erected in memory of the dyke breach of 17 April 1945 and the impressive restoration that followed. The monument marks the spot where the Germans blew up the Wieringermeerdijk during their retreat, flooding the entire Wieringermeer area.

What does the monument symbolise?
The monument is a sober but powerful memorial. It stands on or near the site of the breach and commemorates:
- The destruction wrought in the final days of the war.
- The resilience of the population and the rapid recovery after liberation.
- The efforts of engineers, workers and farmers to push back the water and make the polder fertile again.

Special features
- The monument consists of a boulder with a commemorative plaque providing information about the event.
- Every year, commemorative events are organised around 17 April.
- It is a silent witness to the impact of war on the landscape and the human will to recover and carry on.
