The outdated sign Dutch war grave already indicates that this is a special grave.
The Dutch War Graves Foundation has offered the relatives to rebury the Corporal at the Field of Honour in Loenen, the family respectfully declined this in the 1980s.
After an attack from Hoek van Holland on German airborne troops who had entrenched themselves in the Staalduinse Bos, the Dutch units retreated. When jumping over a ditch, Leendert Vermeulen was hit by enemy machine gun fire in the head, neck and legs. He died on the spot, 500 metres west of the annuitant's house.
Leendert Vermeulen is mentioned in the roll of honour of the Fallen 1940-1945, which is located in the entrance to the Second Chamber of the States General.
