Beau Séjour Madurodam

In Madurodam, the famous miniature park in The Hague, there has been a scale model of George Maduro's birthplace since 1993. This house, called ‘Beau Séjour’, was built in 1895 in Willemstad, Curaçao, and is the only non-Dutch building in the park. The model was placed there in memory of George Maduro, a resistance hero from World War II and the namesake of Madurodam.

The original birthplace at Scharlooweg 55 in Willemstad now serves as the office of the Representation of the Netherlands in Curaçao. On 15 July 2023, George Maduro's birthday, a plaque was unveiled there to officially mark his birthplace.

George Maduro was born on Curaçao on 15 July 1916 and moved to The Hague at the age of ten. During World War II, he distinguished himself as a reserve officer in the Dutch cavalry, particularly during the Battle of The Hague in May 1940. After the surrender, he refused to wear a yellow star and joined the resistance. He was eventually arrested and died on 8 February 1945 in Dachau concentration camp.

Madurodam was founded in 1952 with financial support from his parents, Joshua and Rebecca Maduro, as a living monument in memory of their son. The park not only serves as a tribute to George Maduro, but also supports charities and educational projects.
