The 155-mm C1 Howitzer, a Canadian adaptation of the American M1A1, was built by Sorel Industries in Québec. From 1953, 180 units were produced for Canada and NATO allies. It was Canada's largest domestically manufactured weapon, firing 42 kg shells up to 14,600 metres. In service with the Royal Canadian Artillery from 1955 to 1968, it remained in reserve for years afterward.
