Ovaherero and Nama Genocide Memorial

"Nama and Ovaherero
Genocide Monument
1904-1908
In honour and loving memory of
thousands of Ovaherero and Nama men,
women and children who perished at
this sacred site.
They dies in concentration camps of
hunger, slave labour, sexual abuse,
disease, fatigue and adverse weather conditions
at the hands of German soldiers.
Their remains were buried in
shallow graves by fellow inmates.
Our ancestral lands and restorative justice
remain the inspiration for our struggle
today, tomorrow & forever.
Inaugurated by the late Dr Kuaima Riruaxo
(Ovaherero Paramount Chief)
and the late Chief Christian Zeraua
(Zeraua Royal House)
on 31st March 2007
Script was revised and re-launched by
Adv Vexuii Ruxoro (Ovaherero Paramount Chief)
and Gaob Psm Xooper (Chairperson of the Nama
Traditional Leaders Association)

This memorial sits on the edge of Swakopmund Municipal Cemetery in front of an area that contains many hundreds (if not thousands) of unmarked graves. The 'African Field' as it is now known was the site of one of the German concentration camps.
