The Ernst Casimir barracks in Roermond were built in 1938 to house a border battalion and are named after General Ernst Casimir.
During the Second World War, the barracks were taken over by the German occupiers. After the war, various regiments served there, including the Limburg Hunters, and it later became a training centre until it closed in 1992.
Demolition plans in 1997 met with protest, which is why some buildings were preserved. The site was then redeveloped into the Designer Outlet Roermond.
