Originally a wooden tower built between 1418 and 1426 under Henry V, the Round Tower was later replaced with stone in the 1490s. A defensive chain was added in 1422 to secure the harbor entrance. In the 1680s, ramparts connected it to the Square Tower, and during the Napoleonic Wars, the upper section was rebuilt. Between 1847 and 1850, the roof was modified as a gun platform. Portsmouth City Council purchased the tower in 1958.
