HMAS Parramatta was involved in the 'Tobruk Ferry Service' one of several warships used to escort ships to resupply the besieged fortress at Tobruk. On the morning of 27 Nov 1941 she was struck by a single torpedo from U-559, the damage was so significant that the captain barely had time to order 'abandon ship' before she rolled to starboard and sank with the massive loss of life.
