Munden's Battery

Munden's Battery first existed as a two gun battery in 1673 but was greatly expanded by Governor Roberts in 1708. It was named after Captain Richard Munden whose English fleet had defeated the Dutch and reoccupied St Helena in 1673. The battery was vital for defending the approaches to James Bay. The first battery was positioned on Munden's hill but the second battery was built on Munden's Point and armed with 14 guns manned by the St Helena Artillery Regiment and was constantly updated during the 19th Century. It was manned up until the end of the Second World War, where a searchlight battery was also installed.
