memory of those
St. Helenians who
fell in the Great War"

Major General John Hare C.B & K.B.
This distinguished Officer
served throughout the whole of the
peninsular campaign
He commanded that gallant Corps
the 27th Inniskilling Regiment at the
Battle of Waterloo.
In the command of that regiment
he continued until the year 1837,
when he was appointed Lieut. Governor
and commander of the forces
in the eastern province at the Cape of Good Hope.
After 48 years honourably and actively passed
in the service of his country.
Died on the 10th of December 1846
at the age of 64 years,
on his passage to England,
been compelled to resign his command
from illness
brought on by extreme fatigue and exposure
during the Kafir war,
which shortly after resulted in his death.
His remains were deposited in this island.
