Zeitgeschichtliches Forum Leipzig is a museum about the era of the German Democratic Republic. It is one of four museums belonging to the Stiftung Haus der Geschichte der Bundesrepublik Deutschland (Foundation House of the History of the Federal Republic of Germany). The other museums are located in Berlin and Bonn.
The exhibition begins with the Second World War and, in particular, its end. All in all, this covers only a small part of the total, but it is essential in order to tell the story of the division and that of the GDR.
Next, visitors walk through the history of the GDR. Everyday life, politics, repression and resistance to the regime are explored, culminating in the fall of the Berlin Wall and German reunification. Finally, attention is turned to the present day. How do the former East and West relate to each other and what differences still remain?
Admission is free, and the museum is a must for anyone interested in the history of Germany from 1945 to the present day.
