A LCVP Mk2 (Landing Craft Vehicle Personnel) built for the Royal Marines in the 1960s is mounted on the Holmbush roundabout. It was possibly used in the Falklands War but its serial numbers were removed when it was heavily modified to play a starring role in the film 'Saving Private Ryan'. It was given to Shoreham in memory of the Higgins boats that were used at HMS Lizard in Shoreham port during WW2. Shoreham was a major Landing craft base with at least 6 'hards' for loading landing craft. Combined Operations landing craft depart Shoreham on the ill-fated Dieppe Raid and also to Sword beach on D-Day.
The second LCVP used in filming is at Le Grand Bunker in Ouisterham, France, site of Sword Beach.
Unfortunately the Shoreham vessel has been allowed to deteriorate and is in very poor condition.
