The Royal Marine Infirmary was built in 1860 after the Crimean for to support the nearby Royal Marine Barracks. In 1869, with the closure of the Royal Dockyard, the site passed to the Army and was renamed Red Barracks to reflect the material used in building it. The site continued to be occupied by the Army until 1967. The majority of the site was demolished in 1975 with the exception of the gatehouse and perimeter wall.
