During the May days of 1940, the fortified cellar of Villa Leuvenstein housed the command post of the 46th Infantry Regiment, commanded by Reserve Lieutenant Colonel J.M. Kolff. This regiment occupied the Betuwe Line.
At the time, wooden shelters for the regiment's staff had been built in the surrounding orchards. These shelters were covered with earth and sods to conceal them from view.
