The 'Old Contemptibles' refer to the British Expeditionary Force (B.E.F.) soldiers who served in France and Belgium before Nov 22 1914. The name originated from a derogatory comment by Kaiser Wilhelm II who referred to General French's BEF as a 'contemptible little army'.
The name was embraced with honour and the Brighton branch of the Old Contemptibles Association was formed in 1922.
This stone was laid to mark there place at the annual Armistice Day parades.
