On August 1, 1944, the Second Division, also known as the 2nd D.B., landed at Saint-Martin-de-Varreville (Utah Beach). This unit, consisting of 14,000 soldiers, including 3,350 from the French Empire's overseas territories, was under American command. It was part of General George S. Patton's 3rd Army and General Haislip's 15th Army Corps.
