Here lies the grave of Robert E. Wright (1924–2013). He was born in Ohio and joined the 501st Infantry Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division as a medic in 1942.
During D-Day (June 6, 1944), he landed near the village of Angoville-au-Plain, where he and medic Kenneth Moore set up an aid station in the church. There, they cared for more than eighty wounded men—both American and German—requiring only that weapons be left outside. For three days, they worked tirelessly under heavy enemy fire.
For their courage, Wright and Moore received the Silver Star. Wright later served in Veghel during Operation Market Garden and in Bastogne during the Battle of the Bulge, where he repeatedly set up aid stations under extreme conditions.
After the war, he returned to the US, married, had two children, and after retiring, dedicated himself to the church and charitable projects. Robert Wright died in 2013, aged 89, and was buried next to this church in Angoville, where he had saved so many lives in 1944.
