The D Company of the 70th Tank Battalion was equipped with the M5A1 Stuart light tank. On D-Day, they landed on Utah Beach with the mission of linking up with the 101st Airborne Division.
On June 7, the tanks arrived as reinforcements. The lead tank, the Stuart D12, was destroyed just in front of this house and part of the crew was burned to death.
The tank remained there for several days with the dead tank commander hanging out of the tank turret. The intersection was named after it, the intersection with the dead man, soon to be called “Dead Man's Corner.”
