The observation bunkers at Venbjerg 29-33 are part of the historic Sikringsstilling Nord defense line, built by the German army during World War I (1916–1918). This line ran straight through South Jutland and consisted of approximately 800 bunkers, trenches, and other military structures.
A few bunkers remain in the area around Venbjerg, near Haderslev. The bunkers at house numbers 29 to 33 on Venbjergvej are likely small observation bunkers, similar to others in the region, such as those at Langdyssevej or Store Borgbjerg.
A typical observation bunker from this line is:
approximately 6 to 7 meters wide, partially buried in the ground, built of reinforced concrete, equipped with a small room for personnel, and with a narrow alcove or opening for observation, sometimes with a periscope.
The bunkers did not have heavy steel domes, but were often camouflaged as burial mounds or part of the landscape. They are now usually located on private property, but are sometimes visible from nearby hiking trails. Many bunkers are no longer completely intact, but their remains are still easily recognizable.
