Former Air Raid Shelter Monmouth
These arches under Priory Street, called The Shambles, were built in the 19th century as a slaughterhouse and meat market. Under one of the arches is a primitive air-raid shelter from World War II. At the time, there was a school in the immediate vicinity, and it is likely that this shelter offered protection to pupils and teachers from air raids.
