Military Road, Ramsgate

During the Coalition Wars, Ramsgate was a garrison town and vital embarkation port for troops and supplies heading to the continent. The western arm of the harbour was only reachable by a wooden 'Jacobs Ladder', so in the early part of the war, French prisoners of war were used to build a connecting road along the harbour and a stone staircase.
