V.A.D. Hospital Ramsgate

"Canadian Voluntary Aid Detachment Hospital
From March 1916 until September 1917, Chatham House was used as a VAD Hospital by the Canadian Military. The building was bombed on 22nd Aug 1917 killing 2, John Paul and Pte. D.R. Crighton., and wounding 5 others. On the 24th August 1940, 29 people lost their lives during the 'Murder Raids'. The German attack destroyed 78 houses and left 700 badly damaged. Chatham Street and Margate Road were central to this devastation , with 13 people killed."
Chatham House was home to Chatham House Boys School who were evacuated to enable the setting up of the 250 bed VAD Hospital.
51 Old Boys of Chatham House School died in WW1 and are commemorated by a plaque in St George the Martyr Church.
