inundation lock

After the disastrous year of 1672, the ramparts, moat, and bastions were built to protect Nieuwpoort from the enemy. Along with Schoonhoven, Nieuwpoort formed a key part of the Old Dutch Waterline.
This flood sluice allowed the land to be flooded. This could be detrimental to crops. To prevent farmers from sabotaging the sluice for this reason, it was built beneath the town hall.
