This information panel provides information about the "Filthy Thirteen."
The Filthy Thirteen were a group of American paratroopers from the 101st Airborne Division. Their mission during D-Day (June 6, 1944) was to capture two bridges over the Douve River in Normandy, thus connecting the landing beaches of Utah Beach and Omaha Beach. The unit succeeded in capturing the bridges, but due to poor communication, they were unable to report this to their command. Fearing a German counterattack, General Robert Sink therefore ordered the bridges to be bombed. This resulted in their capture being lost, but a potential flanking attack on the Allies was prevented.
