On the morning of Friday 10 May 1940, around 05:00 local time, a German Messerschmitt Bf 109 E-3 fighter aircraft, operated by 5.(J)/Tr.Gr.186 of the Luftwaffe, was shot down during combat over the Netherlands. Dutch fighter pilot Lt. Vl. H. Doppenberg engaged the aircraft, damaging it and forcing it to crash near Zwinweg road in Anna Paulowna, Noord-Holland. The plane was completely destroyed.
The sole occupant, Unteroffizier W. Rudolf, suffered severe injuries and was taken to the Central Hospital in Alkmaar. He died three days later, on 13 May 1940, at the age of 25. Initially buried at the Algemene Begraafplaats in Alkmaar, his remains were later transferred to the German military cemetery in Ysselsteyn, Limburg.
