The dunes near Schoorl were used for artillery practice and testing. From the "De Franschman" dune near Bergen, a 21 cm Krupp mortar was fired at this area at long range. The mortar was stored in a barn at the "Van Lenten" farm.
After the advent of the high-explosive shell in 1885, the fort's construction had to be modified. Starting in 1887, firing tests were conducted in Schoorl to determine concrete strength and costs. The Permanent Technical Committee led these tests, crucial for the design of bombproof buildings in the Defence Line of Amsterdam. No decision was made, except at Fort bij Abcoude. Tests were also conducted elsewhere, but Schoorl played a key role.
