During the German occupation, the Tuindorp neighborhood had many vacant houses, particularly on Petrus Dondersstraat, 2e Wilakkersstraat, St. Odastraat, and Burghplein.
The rents for these houses were too expensive for many people at the time. The German occupiers requisitioned these houses to house two Schützpolizei battalions (500 men) and horses. A soup kitchen was located on Burghplein, and kitchens were located in the houses at Petrus Dondersstraat 42 and St. Odulphusstraat 6. The Schützpolizei left the neighborhood in May 1941.
The neighborhood was bombed by the Luftwaffe on September 19, 1944. Bombs fell on the cemetery on Burghstraat, on St. Jorislaan, and on St. Odastraat.
When Eindhoven was liberated, most of the houses in the neighborhood were used to billet Allied soldiers. Tent camps were set up in some streets, such as St. Jorislaan and the garden of St. George's Church. A tank repair shop was established on the DAF site.
