In May 1943, the Murmellius Gymnasium on Bergerhout was requisitioned by the Wehrmacht. Students moved to other locations in the city center. Initially, the building housed troops of the Reichsarbeidsdienst (RAD), engaged in reconstruction work and fortifications around Alkmaar. In July 1944, the Hermann Göring Division took over the building with 300 men; a month later, 40 were still present, the rest dispersed to defensive posts throughout the city.
