Memorial Belgian paratrooper Sergeant Jan Melsens

On September 10, 1944, Sergeant Jan Melsens was killed in action at this location.
Belgian paratroopers of the SAS (Special Air Service) were carrying out reconnaissance and combat missions in this region as part of Operation Caliban. During a bold, successful attack on the enemy, the sergeant was mortally wounded.
He is popularly known as the liberator of Meeuwen. A park in the center of Meeuwen was named after him.
