Watchtower American Base Havelterberg

On the Havelterberg, traces remain of the American military base that was located here during the Cold War. While remnants of the German airfield from the Second World War were still visible, the site gained a new military role within NATO in the years that followed.

The watchtower was part of the security and observation system of the base. From this vantage point, American soldiers monitored the area and had a clear view of the surroundings. The base played a role in regional defense and underlined the strategic importance of the Havelterberg.

After the end of the Cold War, the base was closed. Many buildings disappeared, but the watchtower and a few other remains still recall a time when this landscape was closely tied to international security and defense.
