This monument on the parade ground of 45 Painfbat RIOG at the Johannes Post Barracks commemorates the soldiers of the 1st Battalion, 8th Infantry Regiment OvW (War Volunteers) who died between 1946 and 1949 in what was then the Dutch East Indies. This battalion was known as the “Veluwe Battalion” and had the nickname and mascot “De Haantjes” (The Roosters).
The unveiling took place during the battalion's final reunion on 12 June 2025. The monument is located at this barracks because the 45th Armoured Infantry Battalion Regiment Infantry Oranje Gelderland is stationed here. This regiment is a continuation of a number of former Infantry Regiments, including 8 R.I..
The black granite monument with the battalion's emblem (De Haantjes) bears the inscription:
“Veluwe Battalion 1-8 RI 'U-Brigade”
We respectfully commemorate our fallen comrades who gave their lives for Order and Peace'
with a bronze plaque underneath bearing the names of the fallen soldiers.
The monument is flanked by a piece of petrified wood from Java.
Please note that the monument is located on the premises of the barracks and is therefore not open to the public.
