On 14 August 2024, 80 years after the landing, a bronze statue of General Robert Tyron Frederick was unveiled. It was created by sculptor Barbara Ballester.
The front pedestal depicts Commander positions, and the sides depict the units of the FABTF (First Airborne Task Force).
General Frederick is an unsung general, with eight "Purple Hearts" for wounds sustained during operations, the highest number received in World War II.
During the Italian Campaign, he served as a colonel, commanding the 1st Special Service Force (Devil's Brigade), the first unit to reach Rome. As a brigade general, he commanded the 1st Airborne Task Force, which conducted the airborne landings there. He ended the war as a major general with the 45th Infantry Division, responsible for, among other things, the liberation of the Dachau concentration camp.
