A barracks has stood on this site since 1795 when a Militia unit was formed in Dorchester. Some of the buildings date back to around 1880 although the site ceased to be used in 1958. 'The Keep' formed the main entrance to the barracks with the 'Little Keep' the gate at the rear.
The barracks is named after Fort Marabout in Egypt which was stormed by the 54th Regiment of Foot (The Dorsetshire Regiment) during the War of the Second Coalition in August-September 1801.
