Sir John Moore Barracks is the only remaining part of Shorncliffe Military Camp which once comprised of Ross Barracks, Burgoyne Barracks, Somerset Barracks, Napier Barracks, Risborough Barracks and Sir John Moore Barracks. 
The area was acquired by the British Army in 1794 and greatly expanded in the early 1800s because of the threat of Napoleon. Sir John Moore made it the centre for the training of the Light Division. 
It has been used for a staging area for troops assembling for transit to the Crimean War, 1st and 2nd Boer Wars, First and Second World Wars.
Currently it is home to the Royal Gurkha Rifles.
