Unveiled in 2018, this monument entitled “Victory Over Blindness” depicts seven soldiers from the First World War who were blinded by gas, guiding each other away from the battlefield with their hands on the shoulders of the man in front of them.
It is no coincidence that the statue is located in Manchester. During the First World War, thousands of wounded soldiers and sailors were treated at the convalescent hospital in Heaton Park and helped to live with their disabilities, including many people with visual impairments. It was created by artist and sculptor Johanna Domke-Guyot.
