Crash Site Handley Page Halifax MkII BB244 MH-Q

During the night of 29/30 March 1943, at approximately 00:45, the Handley Page Halifax BB244 of RAF 51 Squadron crashed at this location. The aircraft, with seven crew members on board, had taken off from RAF Snaith at approximately 21:45 for a mission to Berlin. On the way back, the aircraft was attacked by German night fighters and caught fire. Before it crashed in pieces in the hamlet of Deldken, one crew member (Eric Williams) managed to parachute out of the crashing aircraft. He was injured but survived the war in captivity. The other six crew members were killed. They were buried in Vorden on 2 April.
