memorial stone has been placed at this location for the crew of the RAF 156 Squadron Vickers Wellington that crashed here on 31 May 1942. The aircraft had departed from RAF Alconbury late the previous evening on a mission to Cologne. The aircraft was attacked by a Bf 110 night fighter flown by Oberleutnant Helmut Woltersdorf of 7./NJG 1 and crashed in flames at 2.55 a.m. All crew members were killed.
The crew consisted of:
Pilot: Sgt Peter Gordon Arthur Malin, RAF, 23 years old
Observer: Sgt James Herbert Holmes, RAF
Wireless Operator/Air Gunner: Sgt Ronald Peel, RAF, 22 years old
Air Gunner: Sgt Leonard Frank Cooke RCAF, 19 years old
Air Gunner: Sgt Raymond Catley, RAF
All are buried in the General Cemetery in Vorden.
