Memorial Elly Sanders Barchem

The Jewish Sanders family came from Haarlem and the parents decided to send their children into hiding in 1942. The eldest daughter Eline "Elly" on Jan Eggink's farm on Vordenseweg in Barchem and the two youngest children Marleentje and Bertje with the Hollebrands family in Sliedrecht.

At the end of August 1943, things went wrong. Parents David and Clara Sanders were arrested in Amsterdam by a member of the notorious Colonne Henneicke who tracked down Jews for a fee. After being severely beaten and under the threat that his wife would suffer the same fate, David revealed the addresses where his children were hiding.

A day later, two members of the Colonne Henneicke arrived at the farm in Barchem and despite all Jan Eggink's efforts not to take Elly, she had to go with them to Amsterdam. The same happened to Marleentje and Bertje in Sliedrecht.

Joop Hollebrands tried for days to get the family out of the Hollandse Schouwburg, but in vain. From Westerbork, they were immediately deported to Auschwitz and murdered there on 10 September 1943.

The journalist Dick Verkijk wrote a book about this family "De Tragische Ondergang van de Familie Sanders" and in March 2024 "Andere Tijden" devoted a broadcast to the family's fate.

The memorial stone in Barchem was placed in 2022 near the crossroad Vordenseweg, Mosselseweg en Wildenborgseweg at the beginning of the sandy path to the farm where Elly was in hiding.
